Door County , Wisconsin - famous for its Fish Boil & a great place for a long weekend.

A few years ago, we toured Door County in Wisconsin - the land of cheese, more cheese, lots of other dairy products and beautiful countryside. Madison is one of my favourite cities in the US of A and it was our base for many trips around Wisconsin.  Hopefully in 2022, we shall go back again to see the city.  

The countryside is really beautiful and scenic.

We came here to try out their specialty - Fish Boil. The Great Lakes region is known for its fish boils. A fish boil is a "culinary" dish consisting of potatoes and fish. It is a tradition in the Great Lakes region of North America. The dish seems to have originated amongst Scandinavian settlers in Wisconsin, on the shores of Lake Michigan.

It is a smoky process - we reached after the pot had been put on the fire. The chef told us that the pot contained the fish - generally white fish like cod and flatfish.  

After 9–10 minutes, when the fish is cooked, the oils rise to the top of the pot. The boiler then tosses a small amount of kerosene on the fire and the increase in flames causes a boilover. The fish oils spill over the side of the pot and the fish is done. The fish chunks remain whole and firm.

As you see the fish chunks are whole and firm. Quite tasty actually despite the bland sounding process. Simple healthy food.

A lot of people have yachts, dinghies and sailboats. This region is full of water based activity.

And finally, once again if you have forgotten, there are really small communities existing and doing quite well across the beautiful United States of America. May their habitat remain peaceful in these difficult Covid times.
